What is Picosure Pro?

The Picosure Pro device targets and breaks down hyperpigmentation (excess melanin underneath the skin). Its ultra-short pulses are used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and a number of other skin concerns.

How it works

Picosure Pro is a picosecond laser with high peak power and ultra-short pulse durations. This treatment uses short bursts of laser energy to target specific areas of the skin, resulting in improved texture, tone, and overall appearance. Picosure Pro Laser reaches below the surface of the skin, breaking down the excess melanin into tiny particles nearly invisible to the naked eye.

Suitable candidates for the treatment

Suitable candidates for PicoSure Pro are those who want to treat uneven skin tone, redness, pigmentation (including post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), sunspots and freckles, shallow or superficial scarring, large pores, and minor skin laxity. It can be suitable for those who may have previously been at risk of hyperpigmentation after undergoing traditional heat-based laser treatments.

PicoSure Pro is suitable for all skin types and can be effective for patients with darker complexions, such as those with Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds. The treatment can be personalised and tailored to the needs of your skin.

Patients may not be suitable for treatment if they have active infections, acne or open wounds in the treatment area. You will discuss your suitability for the treatment during your consultation.

The PicoSure Pro treatment

At the beginning of your treatment, your skin will be cleansed to remove any surface bacteria or dirt. The settings on the PicoSure Pro device will be tailored to your needs, for a personalised and suitable treatment.

During the treatment, the hand piece is passed over the treatment area, emitting short bursts of laser light with high peak power and ultra-short pulse durations. The laser can target melanin beneath the surface of the skin, breaking it into smaller particles. The laser will also work to stimulate collagen and elastin production, improving skin tone, reducing pore size and reducing skin laxity over time. Treatments can take less than 30 minutes, depending on the condition of your treatment area.

The treatment is generally tolerable, with patients typically experiencing minimal discomfort. You will be able to resume your normal daily routine after treatment, following some aftercare steps to help protect your treated skin.

Recovery and aftercare

After treatment with PicoSure Pro, you can resume your daily routine as normal, as the treatment involves minimal downtime. You will be given some aftercare instructions to follow during your consultation, to help protect your skin and support recovery.

You should avoid excessive sun and heat exposure, as the treated skin can be sensitive after treatment. It will be essential to keep your skin clean and moisturised after treatment, with quality products. Our team can recommend products that are suitable for your skin type. Avoid picking or scratching the skin in your treated area, to allow the skin to heal sufficiently. You will need to avoid makeup, exfoliants and strong products, such as retinol products, for a set period of time after your treatment.

Patients can typically notice results about two to three weeks after treatment. You may benefit from multiple treatments with PicoSure Pro for the most benefit.

Possible side effects

When performed by experienced nurses and doctors, treatments with PicoSure Pro involve minimal downtime and side effects. After treatment, patients can experience redness, a sensation of heat and swelling, but this will subside within hours to a couple of days. If treating pigmentation, the pigmented spots can initially appear darker, but this will fade as the body begins to naturally eliminate the melanin in the area. There is a minor risk of infection and scarring, which can be minimised by following aftercare instructions.
